Theatre in the Foothills: Your Fall Guide to October and November Productions

Ask most people what the Foothills is known for and you'll hear about ranches, rodeos, and rolling hills before anyone mentions live theatre. But tucked into a handful of small towns across the region, a genuinely thriving community theatre scene has been putting on shows for decades, and this fall is a great time to see what it's all about.

From a historic 1906 church turned performance venue to a musical theatre society in the woods of Bragg Creek, here's where to catch a show in the Foothills this October and November.

Old Church Theatre, Okotoks

Built in 1906 and originally known as the Rotary Performing Arts Centre, the Old Church Theatre is exactly what it sounds like, a beautifully restored heritage church that now hosts concerts, comedy, plays, and entertainment throughout the year.

This October, catch The Adventures of Robin Hood, a fresh, playful take on the classic tale, running October 2, 3, and 9. Tickets are available through the Showpass Ticketing Service, and multiple performance discounts are available if you're planning to catch a few shows this season.

Swamp Donkey Theatre, Bragg Creek

Swamp Donkey Musical Theatre Society has been a fixture of the Bragg Creek arts scene, putting on full scale musical productions in a community that feels a world away from the city, even though it's less than an hour from Calgary.

This October, the stage belongs to A Taste of Things to Come, running October 16 through 25. Swamp Donkey's season continues into the winter with Matilda Jr. in November and A Bragg Creek Christmas in December, so if this show catches your interest, there's more where that came from.

The Venue, High River

The Venue is a little different from the other stops on this list. Rather than a traditional indoor theatre, it's an outdoor performance space in downtown High River that comes alive with a Summer Series of concerts and community events from June through September.

While The Venue's outdoor season wraps up before October, it's still very much part of the Foothills arts story, and the High River Performing Arts Foundation behind it is currently fundraising for a permanent indoor venue. Worth keeping an eye on for what's next.

Windmill Theatre Players, High River

Windmill Theatre Players is a longstanding community theatre troupe in High River with a loyal local following, and this fall they're deep in rehearsals for their next production.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory hits the stage November 20 to 22 and again November 27 to 28. Auditions have already wrapped and rehearsals are underway, so if you want good seats, it's worth getting tickets early.

Why It's Worth the Drive

Community theatre has a texture you don't get anywhere else, local casts, local crews, and audiences full of people who know the actors on stage. Pair a show with dinner in town, Diamond Valley's Hard Knox Brewery is a short drive from Bragg Creek, and downtown Okotoks and High River both have plenty of local spots worth trying before or after a performance.

Whether you're chasing a specific show or just looking for a reason to explore a new corner of the Foothills, this fall's lineup is a good excuse to see live theatre somewhere you might not have thought to look.
