There's a stretch of a few weeks every September when the Foothills quietly become the best version of themselves. The light goes gold, the air turns crisp, the markets fill up with the last of the summer harvest, and the hills start putting on a colour show that rivals anywhere in the province. It's a short window, and if you know where to look, it's one of the best times of year to get outside and explore.

Whether you're planning a weekend of market hopping, chasing fall colour on a favourite trail, or making it out to one of the region's signature fall events before the season winds down, this is your guide to doing September right in the Foothills.

Fall Harvest Markets

If you can only make it to the Foothills' farmers' markets once this year, make it the fall. This is peak harvest season, when the tables are loaded with squash, apples, root vegetables, and the last of the summer produce, and the vendors bring their best!

The Millarville Farmers' Market runs right through October and is worth building a Saturday around. Fresh produce, local meats, baked goods, and handmade crafts fill the grounds, and the drive out through the rolling hills is half the experience.

The Saskatoon Farm leans fully into the season, with its own harvest market offering pumpkins, fresh baking, and the kind of farm stand atmosphere that makes you want to linger over a coffee before you head home.

Bragg Creek's market brings that same small town warmth, with local vendors and a laid back village setting that pairs perfectly with a fall hike earlier in the day.

And in Okotoks, market season continues to bring the community out, with local producers and makers setting up in the heart of a town that has always taken pride in supporting its own. In High River, the market runs weekly on Thursdays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. through September 17, set up along 4 Ave SW between 1 St SW and Macleod Trail, a great after work stop for produce and a stroll through downtown.

And if you're willing to stretch the season by a few extra days, Nanton's Street Market Fall Harvest Market, presented by the local Chamber of Commerce, lands on October 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m a fitting final stop for anyone who's spent the season chasing markets across the region.

Bring a reusable bag, get there early, and expect to leave with more than you planned on.

Chasing the Colour

Fall colour in the Foothills and neighbouring Kananaskis doesn't last long, so it pays to plan ahead. Peak viewing generally lands somewhere in the middle to late part of the month, when the aspens turn gold and the larches put on their once a year show.

Pocaterra Ridge is the choice for a longer day and sweeping alpine views, best suited to more experienced hikers.

If there's one place on this list with a deadline attached, it's Bar U Ranch National Historic Site. The site closes for the season on September 27, which makes this month your last real chance to experience it before winter.

Before it closes, the Chore Horse Competition brings working horses and riders together for a hands on look at real ranching skill, the kind of demonstration that connects you to the history of the land in a way a museum plaque never could.
