Foothills Family Day Trip: Things to Do With Kids

A family road trip is a timeless tradition, a chance to bond and create lasting memories. The Foothills offer the perfect backdrop for such an adventure, with a range of activities for your family and things to do near Calgary. From outdoor adventures to cozy cafes, there’s something for everyone. Let’s embark on a journey through this picturesque region and discover the magic of family togetherness.

Morning: Fun Outdoors

Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area

Pack up the kids and your car and just a short drive from Calgary, you’ll start your day at the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area for a winter wonderland adventure. Strap on your snowshoes and head out to explore the over 20kms of winding trails. The Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area (ASCCA) is made up of 4,800 acres of rolling foothills land, including 8.1 KM of self-guided interpretive trails. Experience the tranquility of the winter landscape and the invigorating effects of fresh air. The crisp mountain views are an added bonus.

After exploring the ASCCA trails, hop back in the car and set your sights on a warm up in nearby town, Diamond Valley. Your journey turns you onto Highway 22, also known as the famous Cowboy Trail. With spectacular views and beautiful vistas around every corner, be sure to keep your eyes open as you make your way to Black Sheep Coffee. A Diamond Valley local, family owned coffee shop and roaster, this is the perfect place for a warm up after the trails.  House roasted brews, dirty chai lattes and delicious rich mochas are among their most popular items.

Back on the road, you are headed to a Foothills staple -  the Longview Jerky Shop! With over 32 types and 3 styles of jerky, this is a must stop shop - perfect to stock up on snacks for the week, as well as take a peek into the third-generation run shop and explore main street Longview on your way!

Afternoon: Things to Do With Kids

Lunch in Nanton

It’s time to refuel! Heading back east to Nanton, you’ll catch the tail end of some spectacular mountain views. Feel free to pull over to capture that perfect family photo on the way. For those who have worked up an appetite, head for some heartier fare at Wild Thyme Cafe, with a delicious selection of pastas, sandwiches and soups. For those of you who’ve filled up with too much jerky, pop into the new location of Georgie’s Cafe for a bowl of chili, sausage roll or steak and jalapeno pie.

A highlight for any young (or young at heart) folks when in Nanton is THE Candy Store in Nanton. Celebrating 20 years of making children’s dreams come true, the selection here is unmatched, with every kind of candy, fudge and ice cream you can imagine - time flies as you wander around, transported back to a simpler time. One of the top things to do with kids in all of the Foothills!

Heading north, armed with all the snacks and treats your heart desires, we make our way to High River, to the Museum of the Highwood. Featured exhibits showcase the history of the High River area and its residents through engaging storytelling, vivid photographs, and carefully curated artifacts from our collection. The museum welcomes children of all ages to board The Imagination Station exhibit! Embark on a journey through time, from stepping into a general store, visiting an old school room, to crafting seasonal treats, there's fun for everyone.

As the afternoon is winding down, wander down main street High River over to Margins Bookstore, a MUST hit on any family road trip to the town! A cute and cozy little gem with a great selection of new and used books and a wonderful array of boardgames and puzzles. There is something for the whole family at Margins!

Evening: Cap off the Day

Dinner in High River

After the day’s adventure’s, it’s time to debrief over an early dinner in High River. Our pick? Rio Alto Authentic Mexican Food. With plenty of delicious options, house made salsas., braised meats and tortillas, this is the perfect place to fuel up and relive the day's journey together!

Okotoks Fun

Not ready to head home yet? On your way back  through Okotoks, stop and cap off the day of family fun. Feeling up for some more winter adventure fun? The town of Okotoks has 13 outdoor skating rinks around the city. The skating trail at Lions Campground in Sheep River Park and the Suntree Park are two of the more picturesque spots in the city to strap on your skates! On colder nights, a night at Millennium Lanes Bowling Alley could be just the spot for a couple more laughs before you head home. And if you are in a food coma from your tour around the Foothills, check and see if the Okotoks Oilers are playing at Viking Rentals Centre. These BCHL games are fast paced, entertaining and have tons of games to catch.
