There’s something special about winter in Diamond Valley —the way the snow dusts the rolling hills, the crunch of fresh snow underfoot, and the warmth of a good meal after a day of exploring. As a family who loves getting outside no matter the season, we decided to spend a winter weekend soaking in everything this charming part of Alberta has to offer.
So, with the farm animals fed, snowsuits zipped, mitts on, and a thermos of hot chocolate in hand, we set off for a day of fresh air, good food, and small-town charm.
There is no better way to wake up in winter than with a sunny but brisk walk along the Sheep River Pathway. The air was crisp, our breath puffed in little clouds, and the trees lining the river looked like something out of a postcard. The hoar frost hugged the branches. The river, half-frozen but still trickling under layers of ice sparkled under the late winter sun.

While the kids and our dog took off ahead, their feet kicking up tiny snow flurries, we walked behind, soaking in the quiet beauty. Every now and then, we'd spot deer tracks in the snow or hear the distant call of a magpie or a crow, reminders that even in the dead of winter, nature is alive all around us.
Pro tip: Pack a thermos of hot chocolate and pause at one of the benches to take in the view of the partially frozen river. It’s a peaceful way to start the day before heading to the mountains.

Feeling extra adventurous, we packed some snacks, got refills of our favourite hot drinks and drove 15 minutes west to Sandy McNabb for some light snowshoeing. These trails are perfect for a winter wander through the trees, with rolling hills and wide open spaces covered in untouched snow.

The best part? Little to no crowds. Just us, the sound of snow crunching underfoot, and the occasional squirrel darting up a tree. If you’re looking for a quiet escape into nature, this is it. If you are lucky you will see a deer grazing in the distance on the branches with very few berries left on them.

Once you are ready to take the snowshoes off, head to the outdoor rink (it may be a bit bumpy) but you can start a fire, and skate amongst the trees. This spot is a favourite with locals who know about it.
After a few hours in the cold, we needed somewhere cozy to warm up—and the new restaurant, The Irish Pub in Turner Valley was calling. It’s known for its large portions and amazing eats. It’s also family-friendly , making it the perfect lunch stop. This was our first time visiting the new establishment so we were excited to experience it.

The vibe here is laid-back and welcoming, making it the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time—but we still had some exploring to do. Don’t worry Irish Pub, we will be back.
One of my kids’ absolute must-visits in Diamond Valley is Bluerock Gallery. The kids love popping in here to admire the stunning Alberta-made pottery, paintings, and jewelry, but are always drawn to the unique books.

With a book in hand, full bellies, and warm bodies the kids were itching to go skating AGAIN. If you know my kids, they will jump at the chance to get onto the ice and play a game of scrimmage or race each other to see who is the fastest.
As the afternoon light started to fade, we made our way to the outdoor rink located a short drive from downtown. The great thing about this rink is the ice is smooth, it is covered and the lighting they have makes it a great place to enjoy an evening skate.

So grab your snowsuit, your skates, your sense of adventure, and come experience the beauty of a winter day in the Foothills. You won’t regret it.
See you on the trails,
The Vogel Family
