Situated on Highway II, 40 minutes south of Calgary lies the charming town of Nanton. With a population of just over 2,100, Nanton boasts a unique blend of history, culture, funky shops, and varied dining, all with a dose of small-town hospitality. Spending a day here provides a rich tapestry of experiences that capture the essence of authentic Alberta. There is ample free parking throughout town, and an EV charging station on 19th Street.

Morning: A Stroll Through History

Begin your day with a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants – from Georgie’s Café and AnnaLynn’s Tea & Brew Co. on Main Street – to The Bridge or The Bee-stro at the south end of Highway 2 south. Afterward, take a leisurely walk along Nanton’s historic Main Street and 19th Street, where beautifully preserved early 20th-century buildings house a variety of shops carrying antiques and vintage items, books, thrifted goods, candy, home décor items, stained glass and more. Beautifully curated, most of these shops are independently owned and operated by local business owners.

Midday: Exploring Local Attractions

A visit to Nanton wouldn’t be complete without exploring its iconic grain elevators – open by appointment during the off season and for tours during the summer that delve into Alberta’s agricultural heritage. These towering structures, once vital to the province's grain industry, now serve as museums preserving the stories of the past and are home to music concerts and outdoor movies on the sides of the elevators.

For aviation enthusiasts, the Bomber Command Museum of Canada is a must-see. Home to a fully restored Avro Lancaster bomber and other World War II aircraft, the museum provides insight into Canada's rich aviation history. Check their schedule ahead of time or visit their website; before the summer season they are open Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm.

Lunch: Local Flavours

By now, you've likely worked up an appetite. There are many food options such as The Royal Rasoi for Indian cuisine, Sweet Queen for pizza, burgers and milkshakes, Raymond’s and Ming Dynasty for Chinese food, Wild Thyme Café for Italian or Mulligan’s at the Nanton Golf Club just off Highway 533 east.

Afternoon: Art and Nature

Just a short drive east of town lies the Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage. This beautifully preserved homestead features over 18 perennial gardens, walking trails, and repurposed historic buildings. It's an ideal setting to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region. Nanton also boasts a lovely pond in the Westview area just off Highway 533 west. Go for a walk around the pond or bring a take-away lunch and sit at one of several benches provided. If you brought your dog, there’s also an off-leash area just to the west of the pond. If the day is clear, it’s a perfect spot to take photos of the mountains to the west.

Year round there is disc golf and a walking path at Boomer’s Hill, situated on the south edge of town before Highway 533 east, and playgrounds by both the Community Centre and the far end of 20th Street in Westview.

Seasonal Events

Nanton hosts a variety of events throughout the year that showcase its community spirit and cultural heritage. In the summer months, the Nanton Nite Rodeo offers thrilling rodeo action under the stars, celebrating the town's western roots, and the popular Chili Cook-Off during Round-Up Days in August has Main Street buzzing. Mosquito Creek Music hosts music concerts throughout the year and weekly jam sessions at either the Lion’s Campground in the summer or the Community Centre in the winter. As the holiday season approaches, “Nanton Lights the Way”  illuminates the town with festive displays, late-night shopping, and community festivities. These events provide a glimpse into the vibrant life of this small but lively town.

A day in Nanton is more than just a visit; it's an immersion into a community that cherishes its past while embracing the present. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or someone seeking a peaceful retreat, Nanton offers a rich and rewarding experience that is the perfect antidote to a busy week or being in the city.
