Having only been exploring the Foothills for the past three years now I still feel like a newcomer to this stunning area of Alberta, but it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking beauty of this region. Every corner feels like it could be a scene from a Bob Ross painting - rolling hills draped in soft greens, endless blue skies, and jagged mountain peaks standing proudly in the distance. Whether it's the early morning fog blanketing the fields or the sun setting behind the Rockies, the countryside here offers an amazing backdrop that feels almost too good to be true.

Driving through the Foothills, you can’t help but feel captivated by the contrast of landscapes. On one side, you have the wide-open plains gently undulating with the natural rhythm of the land, and on the other, the towering mountains that create a stunning silhouette against the horizon. The views change with every bend in the road, each one offering a new perspective and reminding you of how lucky you are to be in such a special part of Alberta.

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the area is by traveling the Cowboy Trail, a scenic route that winds through some of the most unique and charming spots in the Foothills. From quaint little towns to hidden gems, the Trail has something for everyone. Along the way, you’ll discover historic sites, local artisans, and warm hospitality that give this region its authentic cowboy spirit.

Whether you're craving the quiet beauty of Nanton and Longview, the vibrant energy of Okotoks and High River, or the peaceful charm of Bragg Creek and Diamond Valley, the Foothills has plenty to offer. Each town brings its own personality and hidden treasures. For me, I’ve found that one of the best parts of living here is the endless opportunities for day trips—there’s always a new spot to explore, whether it’s a small-town café or a picturesque hiking trail.

No adventure through the Foothills would be complete without stopping at some of the incredible local spots. Black Sheep Coffee is the perfect place to grab a cozy cup of coffee and enjoy the small-town vibe, while Eau Claire Distillery offers an amazing selection of handcrafted spirits, perfect for a quiet afternoon tasting session. And if you're a fan of craft beer, Hard Knox Brewery is a must-visit with its friendly atmosphere and great brews.

For those who want to extend their stay, the Foothills is filled with charming bed & breakfasts that offer a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. One of my favorites is Willow Hill Lodge in Longview. It’s the perfect mix of rustic and cozy, with stunning views of the countryside. And just down the road, you’ll find Twin Cities Saloon, a true country saloon where you can kick back, enjoy a drink, and maybe even catch some live music. It’s an authentic slice of Foothills life that I can’t recommend enough!

If you’re in the mood for something a little different, Okotoks has an exciting murder mystery experience brought to you by the Foothills Tourism Association. It’s an interactive journey that lets you put on your detective hat and solve a thrilling mystery while exploring the town. It’s such a fun way to spend a day with friends or family, and the storyline will keep you on the edge of your seat!

One of the true joys of living in the Foothills is the access to local, farm-fresh products. The Millarville Farmers’ Market is famous for its incredible selection of handmade goods, fresh produce, and artisan treats. It’s a weekly tradition for many locals, and once you experience it, you’ll understand why. Another gem is Hartell Homestead, which offers a curated selection of fresh products from local farms. Whether you’re in the mood for fresh veggies, homemade jams, or locally raised meats, you’ll find it here.

The Foothills of Alberta is a place that offers something new at every turn. Whether you’re drawn in by the stunning landscapes, the charming small towns, or the warm hospitality, there’s always something to discover. As someone who’s still getting to know this area, I can confidently say that the Foothills is one of the most beautiful and welcoming places I’ve ever been, and I can’t wait to see what else it has in store!
