Planning a day that keeps everyone happy — from toddlers to tweens to tired grown-ups —can feel like a tall order. But in the Foothills, it’s easy to create a day filled with fun, fresh air, and memory-making moments.
Here’s your go-to kid-friendly summer itinerary, filled with hands-on fun, sweet treats, and just the right amount of road tripping through charming small towns like Nanton, High River, Longview, and more.
Stop 1: Granary Road (Foothills County)
Start your day at Granary Road Active Learning Park, just outside of Calgary and nestled in Foothills County. Kids can zip-line, bounce on trampolines, climb, slide, swing, and visit friendly farm animals — all while exploring interactive exhibits that bring local agriculture and nature to life.
For our parents, you’ll love the market area, where you can grab coffee and breakfast treats from local vendors. It’s a lively, scenic start to your Foothills adventure.

Stop 2: Berry Picking at Saskatoon Farm (Foothills County)
Just a short drive south, Saskatoon Farm is a family favourite. In late July to early August, the U-pick fields are full of sweet Saskatoon berries, followed by sour cherries later in the month.
The whole space feels like a mix between a garden centre and a farm. There are animals to see, paths to wander, and plenty of quirky photo ops and beautiful views along the way. (Bonus: the on-site bakery makes a delicious Saskatoon berry pie if you need a mid-morning snack!)

Stop 3: History and Ice Cream in High River
From the farm, head south to High River for a dose of local history at the Museum of the Highwood. One of the highlights is The Imagination Station, a hands-on exhibit area where kids can work a shift at the High River General Store, explore the Superman House, make crafts, and more.
Then treat the crew to a scoop (or two) at Evelyn's Memory Lane, an old-fashioned diner with serious charm. Stroll through George Lane Memorial Park where shaded green space and walking paths make it easy to unwind.

Stop 4: Picnic and Nature Time at Sheep River Falls
Time to reset in nature. Pack a picnic and head west to Sheep River Falls, located in Sheep River Provincial Park just past Diamond Valley. It’s an easy drive with stunning views, and the short walk to the falls is perfect for little legs.
Let the kids explore the riverside, skip rocks, or simply soak up the sunshine while you enjoy a peaceful picnic lunch to the sound of rushing water.

Stop 5: Treasure Hunting in Nanton
After lunch and some nature time, make your way to Nanton, the antique capital of the Foothills. While it’s known for its vintage finds, there’s fun for kids too! The Nanton Candy Store is a child’s dream come true, packed with sweet treats and nostalgic goodies. Even better? At the back of the store, you’ll find Not So Fine Antiques, giving parents a chance to explore while the kids choose their favourite treats.
Be sure to check out the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre, where guided tours run every hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m .and stop by the Bomber Command Museum of Canada for an up-close look at vintage aircraft and aviation exhibits.

Stop 6: Supper in Longview
If time allows, make a stop at Bar U Ranch National Historic Site - a great way to cap off the adventure with wagon rides, barn animals, and hands-on cowboy history the kids will love.
Afterward, head into the western town of Longview for a well-earned supper. Twin Cities Saloon is a true cowboy-style bar that welcomes kids until 9 p.m. With hearty meals, rustic charm, and the occasional live music performance, it’s a fun, relaxed place to wind down.

Bonus Stop: Bragg Creek for a Peaceful Ending
If the energy's still high (or you just don’t want the day to end), take advantage of the long summer days and make your way to Bragg Creek. The Bragg Creek Provincial Park is ideal for a nature walk, creekside exploring, or a relaxing wind-down before heading home.
Tips for a smooth adventure:
Pack water, sunscreen, bug spray - and snacks (always snacks!).
Wear comfortable shoes and layers ( the weather changes fast in the Foothills!)
Let the kids help choose one or two stops - they’ll love having a say in the day!
Don't try to do it all in one day! You can make multiple family summer adventures out here in the Foothills.

Make it a family summer adventure in the Foothills to remember!
There’s nothing like a day of exploring small towns, wandering nature trails, and watching your kids light up at each new adventure. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, petting goats, or digging into homemade pie, the Foothills are full of unforgettable family fun.
